An amazing video showing the thrills of discovering how to fly short runway missions in the Himalayas in the late 80’s. All material was recorded by retired commercial pilot Capt. Stein Arne Fossum while he was working for the UNDP.
I Captain Stein Arne Fossum together with colleagues from Widerøe Airline of Norway was on a STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) mission in Nepal for ICAO in the mid eighties. We where operating the UN Twin Otter on all the famous STOL ports in Nepal.
We where in Nepal to work out routines and techniques for how to land and take off as safely as possible on extremely difficult runways. Flying in the Himalayas is most likely the most dangerous flying in the world. The runways are short, uneven and remote. There is no room for error!
